Balance Rock Inn commands a breathtaking waterfront location on a promontory of nearly three acres, jutting into Frenchman's Bay in the historic resort town of Bar Harbor. The magnificent shingle style building is set like a jewel upon the secluded cul de sac, an icon of comfort, grace and style. A few steps past the lily ponds, expansive flower gardens and manicured lawn will put you on the historic Shore Path, which winds from the seaport's pier along the ocean's edge, past many glorious mansions built over a hundred years ago. Along this path is the Inn's namesake sentry - the balance rock, a rare geological formation which seemingly defies gravity by balancing on a slender stone fulcrum. Indulge in the peacefulness of the Inn's surroundings, with ocean views from your room, the Inn common rooms, or the pool and grounds... or take advantage of being just one block from the heart of Bar Harbor, where many activities, attractions and adventures await your discovery.

Bar Harbor

The town of Bar Harbor, population about 4,500, is the center of activity for Mount Desert Island and the gateway to Acadia National Park. Located on the northwestern corner of Mt. Desert Island, Bar Harbor is the island's largest town as well as the location of most of the island's restaurants and unique vendors. Main Street is lined with nineteenth century wood buildings converted into antique shops, fine apparel boutiques, art galleries, gift shops and cafes. All types of boating and sailing activities are available, including whale watches, scenic cruises, sea kayaking, fishing, as well as other sports such as golf, tennis, gliding, and bicycling. From Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and the rest of the island are easily accessible. A state-of-the-art catamaran ferry sails between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

Mount Desert Island

When you cross the bridge from the mainland you instantly sense that Mount Desert Island is no ordinary place. The unspoiled beauty of "Down East" Maine is evident everywhere you look. Acadia National Park

Awed by the beauty and diversity of the rugged coast of Maine, early 20th century visionaries donated the land which became Acadia National Park, encompassing 62 square miles, nearly half of Mt. Desert Island. The park includes a host of unique sites and wonders including the famous Otter Cliffs, 1,527 foot Cadillac Mountain - the tallest mountain on the Atlantic coast north of Brazil, the scenic 27-mile Park Loop Road, the Wild Gardens of Acadia, and the famous stone bridges.

During certain times of the year, Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the U.S. to see the sunrise. Ideal for hiking and biking on the historic carriage roads, the scenic beauty of Maine's ocean shoreline, coastal forests and mountain silhouettes is nowhere more accessible than in Acadia National Park.
